Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry said that she was shy to act during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved in New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her on her role on the ABC Drama Scandal. The same year, she portrayed a child version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother as a young version. The role was offered to her in an audition that was open despite being connected to the persona.
